This is the twenty eighth book in the successful Fighting Fantasy gamebook series, written by Jonathan Green and is set in dark and brooding Old World.
Book Description: Another exciting Fighting Fantasy adventure. Beware the Curse of Akharis!
THE BEAST IS LOOSE!
Rassin Abbey has guarded its arcane treasures for centuries. But when their Black Grimoire is stolen, the land of Ruddlestone is plunged into a crisis of epic proportions. For the ancient book holds the key to the legendary Casket of Shadows - and the evil imprisoned within it. Should it be opened the Infernal Beast will be unleashed to wreak its terrible carnage across the Old World.
On the night of Shekka's moon, scant days away, this will surely come to pass, unless one brave hero can retrieve the Black Grimoire in the nick of time - a hero like YOU!
In this third (re-edited) Jonathan Green adventure, originally printed as the 53rd original Penguin gamebook, you find yourself in popular setting of the Old World, and what a fine mess you've got yourself into this time. The disaster happens when you are making a pilgrimage to Ruddlestone. A tough adventurer, you begin to seek something else and decide to take the pilgrimage. When you are upon the heath a massive storm breaks out. During the storm you encounter another pilgrim with the same motives as yourself...Only he hasn't!
The two of you decide to make for Rassin Abbey, but on the way you encounter hordes of demons attacking you from the sky. You fend them off with your weapon but your friend has to use his hands. Still, you both make it to the Abbey and you proceed to invite him in. The monks that you meet there offer the best hospitality for pilgrims, but you fail to expect the treachery of your friend.
It is during the night that he sneaks off and murders an innocent monk after locking himself inside the room. You try to help but can't! When you finally knock the door down, a horde of monks are also on the trail and when you descend the stairs you catch up with the man who is holding a black book that has obviously been attained from an open oaken chest. Mockingly, he thanks you for your help in his villainy. Then an incantation results in a black cloud descending across the room. When it lifts he is gone and something is materialising in his place.
Immediately you are sent into the fray with a tough encounter right from the start. You must recover the stolen book, the Black Grimoire, before the Old World suffers from the consequences.
