Welcome Adventurers' to the FIGHTING FANTASY : Beyond the Pit. This area of the Official Fighting Fantasy website has been created as an ongoing project to present the entire resource of all Fighting Fantasy related monsters and encounters in the series past and present.
Through this alphabetical index, you can explore all the entries held in Beyond the Pit.
This field is very important, especially when playing as a GamesMaster as it is used to help distinguish the general behaviour of a creature and how it will act. Once an encounter does occur, this field is used to describe what the creature will most likely do (although every creature of the same species described within this volume will not always act the same) and how they may act in one of a number of ways:
Flight: The creature reacts with panic and avoids confrontation by fleeing the adventures.
Friendly: The creature greets them warmly, and shows no open aggression at all. It is kind and helpful, may share food or provide useful information, however will quickly turn hostile if treated with little or no respect and attack. Friendly creatures are generally pleasant, polite and appeasing.
Neutral: A creature will act warily, be unimpressed, act unconcerned but will not normally show open hostility provided they are not threatened or attacked. Neutral creatures are generally cautious, wary, suspicious and guarded.
Unfriendly: This creature will shows displeasure at encountering the adventurers but will not leap straight into battle unless they know or believe they have a chance of winning. Unfriendly creatures are generally intimidating and short-tempered although can be impressed into helping as adventurer with money, treasure or feats of strength or magic, though they have to be watched carefully.
Hostile: When encountered this type of creature leaps straight in to a fray with little thought for winning and losing. If the creature has a low WITS, it may be just very hungry! If it has a high WITS score, it may have a hatred for other creatures not of its own kind. Hostile creatures are generally violent, aggressive, and hot-tempered.
In some scenarios, a creature’s reaction may include more than one; which one it takes will depend upon how carefully the adventurers treat it. A wolf may snarl and leap straight at an adventurer, in an attempt to break its prey’s neck with dripping saliva filled jaws; at other times it may simply flee in fear. There are times not often presented in many Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks, that a creatures may not always fight to the death, and will instead retreat to lick its wounds. Intelligent humanoids may for example simply choose to surrender.
We hope the Beyond the Pit will become an enjoyable read and you are welcome to voluntarily advise or correct entry continuity, missing alphabetical creatures, spelling, grammar or link errors if any are discovered.
